“University administration negotiators walked away from the bargaining table Sept. 24. Faculty of theology professors and librarians will be in a legal strike position, or could be locked out by management, as of midnight Oct. 8.” Catholic Registrar, http://www.catholicregister.org/news/toronto-gta/item/15133-st-mikes-faculty-on-cusp-of-strike
In response to the escalating situation that will have serious ramifications for faculty and students UTFA has passed this motion:
“The Executive Committee of the University of Toronto Faculty Association (UTFA) wishes to express its full support for the certified faculty and librarians at the University of St. Michael’s College (USMC) attempting to negotiate a first contract. We endorse the principled positions of our St. Michael’s negotiating team on the crucial issues of academic freedom, job security, and collegial governance. The UTFA negotiating team at USMC is protecting core principles that underpin collegial governance and academic excellence. We encourage the negotiating team to continue to protect tenure, academic status and the free exchange of ideas in the College and we call on the USMC Administration to return to the table, respect collegial and shared governance at St. Mike’s, and negotiate a fair first contract that respects our colleagues.”
